This is a Roman Catholic parish church located in the Hoxton area of London’s East End. It was built in 1866 to designs by E W Pugin. It is located on Hoxton Square and is a Grade II listed building.
The Order of St. Augustine was invited in 1864 to start a mission for the local Catholic community by Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman. The site at 18 Hoxton Square was bought for the location of the church for £1609 and the foundation stone was laid on 20th September, 1864 by the Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Westminster. The completed church was opened on the feast day of St. Monica, 4th May, 1866.
The reredos by Franz Mayer of Munich was installed in 1875 and in 1880, a Lady Chapel was added to the church. It was designed by John Young. The Augustinian Friars started to go out to serve the Catholic community in Hammersmith from 1903 eventually building St. Augustine’s Church there in 1916.
