Igreja de São Sebastião da Pedreira, Lisbon

The Parish Church of São Sebastião da Pedreira, located in the center of Lisbon, at the top of Rua Tomás Ribeiro, near Parque Eduardo VII. It was founded during the reign of King John IV on the site of Pedreira (quarry) and inaugurated in 1652. The entrance of the church is reached by a side staircase due to the unevenness of the churchyard.

The interior of the church is richly decorated in the Baroque style of the 17th and 18th centuries and this is in stark contrast to the relative plain façade. The gilded woodwork of the chancel was carved by Manuel João da Fonseca (1685) in the National Style. The earthquake of 1755 caused major damage to the church – the coffered ceiling (1670) was destroyed. The current ceiling, with it’s stucco paintwork depicting the patron saint dates from the end of the 19th century and is the work of João Câncio de Sousa.
