This church, more commonly known as Farm Street Church is a Catholic parish church located in the Mayfair area of Central London. It is run by the Society of Jesus. It’s main entrance is on Farm Street but it can also be accessed from the adjacent Mount Street Gardens.
The Jesuits first began looking for a site for their church in London during the 1840s, and they found the site in the mews of a back street in Mayfair. Pope Gregory XVI received a petition in 1843 from English Catholics requesting permission to erect a Jesuit church in London and the plans were approved.
Fr Randal Lythgoe, the Superior of the English Jesuits, laid the foundation stone in 1844. The church was built in the Gothic revival style and the architect was Joseph John Scoles. Due to the limited size of the plot, the church was orientated north-south. The front of the church on Farm Street was modelled on Beauvais Cathedral. The high altar was designed by Augustus Pugin. Following bomb damage during WWII, the church was remodelled by Adrian Gilbert Scott.
