This is a Roman Catholic parish church located on Prescot Street near to Tower Hill. It was founded by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1865. A part of their mission is to ‘evangelize the abandoned poor.’
The foundation stone for the English Martyrs Church was laid 18th May, 1873 by Cardinal Henry Manning, Archbishop of Westminster. The church was designed in the Gothic Revival style by E W Pugin. The building of the church was delayed due to problems with the buying of the land along with Pugin’s death. The work was then completed by Pugin’s bothers, Cuthbert Welby Pugin and Peter Paul Pugin. The church was opened by Cardinal Manning on 22nd June, 1876.
