St. Salvador’s Church, Dundee

on

This church is located in Dundee and is part of the Diocese of Brechin in the Scottish Episcopal Church. It’s dedication is a medieval Scottish version of St. Saviour. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style by George Frederick Bodley. One of only two churches in Scotland designed by him – the other being St. Bride’s Church in Glasgow.

Alexander Penrose Forbes, Bishop of Brechin founded the parish in 1856. It’s mission was to service and care for the many jute mill workers and their families who lived in the tenements surrounding the church. This area was known as Hilltown. Bodley designed the complex of buildings which is still seen today. That is the church, school and halls. Despite the simplicity of the gothic stone exterior, the stencilled plaster interior is alive with colour and decorative design.
