The Sultan Qaboos is the largest mosque in the country of Oman. It is located in the nation’s capital city, Muscat. Plans for the mosque date back to 1992 when the late Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said Al Said directed that the country should have a Grand Mosque.
Following a competition held in 1993, the building contract was awarded to Carillion Alawi LLC with the exterior architects being Quad Design with Mohamed Makiya and the interior, Edgard Bali. Construction began in December 1994 and took just over 6 years to complete. The mosque is constructed in a Contemporary Islamic style. One of its main features is the prayer hall carpet, weighing over 21 tonnes and containing 1.7 billion knots it took 600 workers four years to produce. The main chandelier above the prayer hall is 14m tall and weighs 8.5 tons and also contains an internal staircase for maintenance.
