Church of St. John the Evangelist, Edinburgh

This imposing church is located at the west end of Princes Street at it’s junction with Lothian Road in central Edinburgh. It is part of the Scottish Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Edinburgh.

Construction of the church began in 1816 to designs by the architect, William Burn who was only 25 at the time. The church was built in the Neo-gothic style. The church was dedicated on Maundy Thursday 1818 as St. John’s Chapel. Since then, the church has been enlarged and extended with the sanctuary and chancel being built between 1879-82. The vestry and hall were added in 1915-16, and in 2018 a modern church hall, offices, meeting rooms and toilets were added. St. John’s is well known for it’s glorious plaster pendant fan vaulted ceiling which is derived from that found in the Henry VII Chapel at Westminster Abbey.
