on

The Church of St. Barnabas is a parish church of the Church of England situated in the area of Pimlico in Central London. The church is noted for being the first church to be built with the avowed intention of carrying out in practice the religious and pastoral ideals of the Oxford Movement.

The church was founded by the Rev. William Bennett, who at that time was Vicar of St. Paul’s Knightsbridge and was consecrated on St. Barnabas Day, 11th June, 1850. The architect was Thomas Cundy jnr who designed the church in the Early English Gothic style. The foundation stone was laid on 11th June, 1847 by the Marquis of Westminster. The rood screen and altar were designed by George Frederick Bodley, whilst the the sacrament house in the sanctuary and the Lady Chapel were designed by Sir Ninian Comper. The pulpit is thought to have been by William Butterfield and is in the Early English style.
