St. Stephen Walbrook

on

This church is located in the City of London in the Walbrook Ward next to the Mansion House. It is part of the Diocese of London in the Church of England. The present domed building was built to designs by Sir Christopher Wren following the Great Fire of London in 1666.

The original church was located on the west side of the street now known as Walbrook and on the east bank of the Walbrook. This was then an important freshwater stream for the Romans. It ran in a south-westerly direction across the City of London to the Thames from the city wall at Moorfields. This church was thought to have been built over the remains of a Roman Mithraic Temple. The church was moved to its present site during the 15th century with the foundation stones being laid in 1429 and the church being consecrated ten years later on 30th April, 1439.

This new church was subsequently destroyed on the second day of the Great Fire of London in 1666. Sir Christopher Wren designed the new church, which was built between 1672 and 1679 in the Baroque style at a cost of £7.692. The church is rectangular in plan, with a dome and attached north west tower. The dome is 63 feet (19m) high and is based on Wren’s initial design for the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is centered over a square of twelve columns of the Corinthian order. The interior of this church is considered onw of Wren’s finest.
